Hull Surface Defects

After the first layer of epoxy has been applied to the fibreglass, and then sanded there are three main types of defect which show up:

Of these, the first two are not too much of a problem, but the third has to be fixed by filling. There is a definite pattern which emerges as you sand which will distinguish these types from each other.

With the first, the resin surface first becomes dull as you sand, and as you sand further, the weave pattern begins to emerge.

A resin blob on top of the glass:
after further sanding the pattern shows through.

With the second type the glass pattern retreats the more you sand, indicating that you are cutting through the glass and into the resin underneath.

Here, the dull areas begin to increase as the sanding progresses and more glass is cut away.

This type appears more commonly at the ends of the fibreglass, and was quite a problem near the transom. But as there will be more resin applied anyway, I do not try and sand them smooth at this stage, hoping rather that they will be covered by further coats, as indeed happens.

After the first coat and sanding (above), and then after the second coat (right).

The third, and most significant defect is the true bubble, which declares itself quickly by revealing the void underneath. This has to be filled with resin after any loose material is removed from inside it.

A true bubble in the glass. Thankfully, few of these are found.
