Because the carlings are installed in a vertical plane on the plans, the coaming boards which are attached to them have to be vertical as well. In order to restore the canted look of the traditional boats to the construction, the carlings had to be canted. This meant that they had to be laminated. There was no possibility of twisting 25 mm. thick boards. Two layers of 12.5 mm. thickness were used instead. It also meant that the apertures in the bulkheads to receive the carlings had to be altered.
Apertures in successive
bulkheads are at slightly different angles to allow the cant
of
the carlings to follow the inclination of the hull.
One good move in this stage of the construction was to have attached the bulkhead top frames before the carlings were fitted. This gave something for clamps to grip when holding the carling timbers down in the apertures.
